How to Make Free Reading Your Main Course Work

Free reading is important. It can give students the opportunity to read what they like. This means they will read more and thus, become better readers. So, why don't we use it with our instruction?

We totally should! One of the hardest parts of allowing students to select their reading materials for main course work is that it's difficult for teachers to read every story that a student may choose. But, what if you could?

Our reading journals allow students to read any book they love and still get a solid common core aligned guided practice. Students can read a chapter of their favorite book, read the guided task along with examples and explanations on each entry page, and then spend time enjoying the material they are analyzing. Our prompts include questions like:

And also include engaging creative prompts like:

Change the perspective. Who is talking in your book? Rewrite the main events you've read so far in the story as if it were told from the viewpoint of someone new.

Even better, our journals allow kids to draw, doodle, and enjoy their books too!
